Some examples of the skills pianists may learn from Bach are:

1.) To recognize the smallest unit of musical invention; the motif.

2.) To recognize, and more than that, to sense the fertility of invention as patterns of a few tones grow into a large structure.

3.) To learn to define a phrase and to relate it to the whole.

4.) To give movement to the phrase, which includes recognition of its harmonic direction and definition through the art of duration and accent.

All of this infers recognition of the chain of cadences, which every piece of music until recent times had as one of its components. The great German conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler took pleasure in describing music as “a multiplicity of ever smaller cadence spaces, superimposed, one upon the other.”

If we agree with the painter Paul Klee, emphasis on movement may never be too great. “All becoming is movement—the sense of action is time—the one and only character—movement.”

5.) To recognize the difference between sentiment and sentimentality.

6.) To master the disciplines and develop a control of emotion and control the “act of touch” (Tobias Matthay), without which one may not play with genuine simplicity—and not to confuse simplicity, which is unadulterated beauty, with simplemindedness, which is nothing.

7.) To be able to produce poetry in sound, the desired mood, and even Romantic dreaming, with spontaneity while not becoming trivial or personal.

8.) To be accomplished in the art of carrying the several voices of polyphonic music, each independently phrased and articulated, which involves the highest attainment in fingering, timing, dynamic relationships, duration, contrasts, color, and mood combinations, all to be carried out with an extreme development of the art of touch. Clear tones, at every level of quantity, must be vital, ringing, never heavy, never coarse, and never reckless, always with character and variety at the artist’s command.

9.) To play with abandon, yet with control; with spontaneity, without recklessness; with poetry, without suffering; passion without anguish, and to produce silence that is pregnant with meaning.

10.) To use the pedals with frightening delicacy!

11.) The last and most comprehensive skill, which can be mastered only (cont.)
