Eunice Norton recorded this prelude and fugue late in 1996 when she was 88-years old. It was her final recording. Played right after the Toccata in d minor (BWV 913) at her home studio, the two works were documented a few days before a sudden and debilitating spinal ailment forced the pianist to relinquish her ritual of daily rehearsal, ending her nearly 90 year relationship with piano performance. Ironically, Norton considered this last pair from Bach’s first book of the Well-tempered Clavier to contain his greatest fugue. It was her fourth recording of the masterpiece (1958, 1968, 1990), which she always programmed as the last work (rather than book 2, #24) during her numerous performances of the collection of 96 pieces.
