An Interview with Eunice Norton

It’s always an invigorating experience to encounter the musical past embodied in a real live performer in the present. As a newspaper critic in Chicago in the late 1970s, I had the privilege once of dining with Rudolph Ganz, who had played for Brahms. But Ganz at that time was no longer active even as a teacher, though he did go to hear all of his former students whenever they played in Chicago. The difference with the pianist Eunice Norton, who was playing concertos with Sir Henry Wood and the Queens Hall Symphony Orchestra in London as long ago as 1924, is that my first encounter with her came through hearing a CD set of the Bach partitas, of which four were recorded within the last three years.

It surprised me to think that this technically assured playing came from a woman of eighty-seven, and to observe – a few minor details aside – how keen an understanding she possessed of Baroque stylistic principles that we tend to claim as brilliant discoveries of our own time. When I read more about her, I was brought face-to-face with a still more arresting thought: that the past, despite our Homeric propensity to dwell fondly on departed glories, was not by any means by every respect a Golden Age. With all its problems, musical life today is in some ways healthier than it was in the early years of the century. And in regard to the issues that really count, the undimmed vitality of Eunice Norton’s playing as she approaches her nineties stems from the maverick qualities she was already demonstrating as a teenage prodigy.
