Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra, discographically active since 1921, was the seminal influence on the birth of Big Band Swing Style. This collection covers the most creative period of his career ranging from the middle Twenties, when he was often refferred to as the “black Paul Whiteman” to 1934 when he disbanded and joined the Benny Goodman organization, becoming chief arranger of the “King of Swing”’s band.
Listening to these masterworks in chronological sequence tells the story the birth of swing, really.
Besides great arrangements by himself and other top names like his brother Horace and Benny Carter, we have a chance to hear some of the greatest soloists of the period: trumpeters Rex Stewart and the nearly forgotten Bobby Stark, trombonists Jimmy Harrison, Benny Morton and Dicky Wells, clarinetist Buster Bailey and, above all, the one and only saxophonist Coleman Hawkins.
